In the example you gave, Grandma is anecdotal, which can't be used for approval. That's why a placebo-controlled trial is needed, to prove whether a drug works or not. Further, unblinding is necessary to understand if the placebo effect is playing a part. This is just common sense.

Until we see the protocol, IMO any unplanned views of the data are just wishful thinking.
