No, they're simply making the process happen

If an MM is facilitating a buy to a buyer, the MM are buying the stock for the buyer.
So, MM's are buying and selling shares.


But that's not what they're doing.

They're helping to put buyer and seller together by listing one or both sides of the trades, then transferring the shares from one to the other (with the money going in the opposite direction) when a match is made.

It's kind-of like a real estate broker listing one or both sides of a home for sale. They put the buyer and seller together and help make the transaction run more smoothly, but they never actually own the house.
