I won't rule out Rufus getting conned because I have seen a bond scam at work before. However, he was the CEO and the Captain of your ship.

Do you think it mattered much to the passengers on the Titanic that the captain made an honest mistake? They still lost their lives, just as the people here are going to lose most of their money.

Rufus was not all that bright. Charismatic, yes, but uneducated and claiming to be a bond origination expert with no real experience. Chalk it up to getting an expensive edcation if you had much at risk here.

The rest thing was always bogus. That should have been the big red flag for you.
