#13198 RE: Elmer Phud #13192

Elmer, that was disingenuous! Refer back to my post -

Also, I am very happy with the availability and growing acceptance of Opteron - it is meeting my most optimistic expectations.

Opteron has been doing a very nice ramp for a brand new server architecture. I think there are unrealistic expectations - both from AMD fans and Intel fans - about how fast they should ramp. We are getting supercomputer design wins that I hadn't expected before April, and (as I've posted many times) corporations have to put Opteron servers in the IS lab and qualify them for an extended period. They've been available now for six months, the market is growing about as fast as one can realistically expect.

That is the whole point - AMD is manufacturing Opteron in the quantities necessary for introducing a brand new server design from a company that is just building their reputation for servers. It seems to be doing just fine, thank you.

By the way - evidence of decent manufacturing can be found in the relatively recent decision to introduce the Athlon64-FX, a 1x Opteron core being sold for the desktop. (There are enough extra socket 940 processors to start a high end workstation product line.) If there were manufacturing problems then AMD would only be introducing a socket 754 Athlon64.
