A Light for Life’s Path
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105)

Everything we need to know about God is found in the Bible. There are no exceptions. To know God’s will for our lives, we must recognize that He speaks primarily through His Word.

On the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was poured out, everyone was trying to understand what was happening. Peter stood up and said, “What you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel” (Acts 2:16 NLT). We need to have a biblical basis for everything we say and do.

This doesn’t mean taking Scripture out of context, which is something that often happens. People read the Bible with a hunt-and-peck approach, taking in a little of this and a little of that.

Imagine if you were reading someone’s letter to you. First you read the conclusion, then you read the middle, and then you read something from another letter they sent to you. Then you try to make sense of it. That won’t work. You need to read the letter that’s been sent to you contextually. Read the beginning, the middle, and the end.

In the same way, when we’re interpreting the Scriptures, we must understand who it was originally given to and what the original meaning of it actually was. A little understanding of the original language can be helpful as well.

The Bible tells us that “all Scripture is inspired by God” (2 Timothy 3:16 NLT). Another way to translate this verse is, “All Scripture is breathed by God.” If you want to know God’s will, then you must be conversant with God’s Word. The psalmist said, “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105 NLT).

We need to know the Word of God if we are going to know anything about God.
