Not quite true. They were underdogs to the Yankees - unsurprising considering the Yankees, Mets and Tigers were at the top of the heap. But they were 5:4 betting line favorites over the As.

But that's what makes baseball fun. The upset factor. Even the biggest underdogs in the biggest mis-matches on paper, can prevail in the short term.

For that very reason, the 1988 World Series was one of my favorites. You may recall the Dodgers went into that Series as a prohibitive underdog to the As. On paper, it was a terrible mismatch. But the Dodgers had Orel Hersheiser pitching at the end of perhaps the finest pitching streak in the history of the game, and that became the big equalizer, setting the stage for Kirk Gibson's gimpy heroics.

Obviously you remember the Tigers and Cardinals series, which most people rank right up there.
