Evaluation of Dräger Drug Test -

The report also goes on to say,

The DDT5000 did not absolutely correctly identify DUID offenders due to fairly large proportions of false-positive or false-negative results compared to drug concentrations in blood.

Many of the issues surrounding the saliva test center on the invasiveness of the procedure (police swab the suspects mouth for a couple of minutes) as well as the time needed (10-15 minutes from the beginning of the procedure to the results).

In Australia, authorities estimated the saliva test’s accuracy at about 66%. Accuracy is impaired in cold and hot weather as well,

Using the gold standard of mass spectrometry in tandem with the Cannabix FAIMS prototype device, Graph A and B below show suppression of background matrix allowing the THC peak to be easily recognized.

This demonstrates the capability of the FAIMS device to isolate and detect THC from complex background matrix.

The Company also reports that it has commenced identification of medical device manufacturers in order to implement human factor design (single or dual stage design), verification testing, and develop manufacturing documentation for standardization requirements, as well as create multiple devices for pilot testing.

It is possible additional devices could be approved by the federal government, giving police agencies the choice in which they decide to employ, if they elect to add saliva tests to their roadside arsenal at all.

Oregon crime labs drowning in urine samples-

Marilyn Huestis, the former chief of chemistry and drug metabolism for the National Institute on Drug Abuse, said it is nearly impossible for fluid testing to accurately determine whether someone is impaired by tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive compound in marijuana.

Adding to the problem, she said, is the fact that THC lingers in the body much longer than other drugs. Anyone high a week ago most likely still has the drug in his or her system.

To date, oral fluid is the most studied and promising alternative matrix for DUID programs. However, THC is detected in oral fluid for 48 hours in chronic smokers during sustained abstinence.

Exhaled breath may offer an alternative to oral fluid testing as cannabinoid detection in this matrix may better coincide with impairment.

An interesting read worth revisiting.

Live Testing with Cannabix Marijuana Breathalyzer Shows Excellent Sensitivity for THC and Related Metabolites -

The ability to detect THC and its metabolites in human breath is a significant scientific breakthrough that allows for real-time pharmacokinetic analysis. Such analysis provides a method for the identification of frequent users of marijuana who tend to retain THC in their body for longer periods of time, relative to infrequent marijuana users who tend to clear THC from their body more quickly.

Marilyn Huestis from the National Institute on Drug Abuse states, “…on average in the United States it takes from 1.4-4 hours after a crash or traffic stop to administer a blood test. If someone is driving impaired, by the time you get their blood samples, you’ve lost 90% or more of the drug.”

This is also posing a problem with how quick THC can leave the bloodstream. Changing the test performed at the roadside when the individual is most impaired could make a difference in keeping the public safe and impaired drivers off the road...
