There is probably about 300 tons flying around the world still from all the planes put into service from 68 to 1981. They use tungsten now instead.
That re enriched stuff is pretty valuable. Pakistan ships out a lot even to the USA as does Iran, albeit illegal. A few countries in Eastern Europe manufacture DU tipped ammunition much of that sold to our friends in Afghanistan and N. Korea. Our ex Sec of State can fill you in on the details. Is there FAA funny business? The whole place is one big joke from the top down to a few inspectors, but of course a lot of good folks there too just doing their jobs hoping they don't have to turn a blind eye.
