THE CASE
According to thousands of plaintiffs involved in the Multidistrict Litigation, Depuy’s Pinnacle hip implant is linked to cases of metallosis, pseudotumors, and other conditions caused by the leaching of cobalt and chromium, two metals used in the manufacturing of the device. Plaintiffs have had to undergo serious revision surgeries and rehabilitative treatment to resolve their medical issues.

With more knowledge being put out there of the dangers of CoCr, you would think every major ortho company would be looking for alternative material. Seems like a great opportunity for a company with a material that doesnt cause these issues.

Interestingly smoker that accusation about J&J lawyers was not the first. Of course they couldnt substantiate anything.

Its interesting that the rep feels Metal on Poly is actually worse than metal on metal as wear increases in MoP. From the studies ive read poly wear particles are certainly not great as they induce inflammation & osteolysis, but metal particles cause more systemic problems. Then again maybe there are other side effects from plastic being in the body not scientifically presented.

I'm curious what ratio Zimmer sells of ceramic vs MoP implants. Zimmer certainly offers more CoCr femoral heads than Biolox.
Could the issues with CoCr prompted Zimmer to work with Amedica on a new ceramic/poly implant? I mean Zimmers gotta be looking for alternatives as hip/knee is its bread n butter....kind of like iphones are apples. Just think of what would happen to Apple if it was widely known and accepted that cell phones cause cancer? Apple would definitely kiss goodbye its trillion dollar valuation.
