I find it endlessly fascinating that Bapco deemed the sort in Excel to be such a crucial operation that it is the dominant element in their benchmark...

I think the best benchmark of this kind would be to record the behaviour of some users and replay that on different machines in a similar software setup. Any application idle times (when the user is reading something or searching a submenu ;) should be removed).
CJ, and did you know that the Excel "sort" function is a one-time-only operation. You tell it to sort, but it does not maintain sorted order if data changes.
