You aren't conservative, iamshazzam. You seem to be more of a religious zealot than a conservative. Most of your "issues" are morality ones, not fiscal. "Family values" is not the only issue that us conservatives care about. We care about limiting the size and scope of government. We care about national defense, crime and punishment, and about the second amendment (not only the second, but all of the rest of the bill of rights). We care about freedom to practice whatever religion you wish to practice, but do not believe that the government should establish a state religion. We believe that a balanced budget makes sense, and that deficits should only be run up in times of national emergency. I wouldn't vote for Ted Kennedy on a bet. I don't think I would vote for George W. Bush again either. Can't the republicrats find someone closer to being a true conservative and not a bible thumper? As to Jocelyn Elders, if memory serves, she left her post as a result of her extreme views. Extremism in either the left or right is not a virtue. While she made some good points, she was a bit too far left even for most left wingers.
As to same sex marriage, I don't legitimize deviant behavior, nor do I care to. As far as I'm concerned it is simply a non issue. We pay for long term care for those who need it and can't afford it. Smoking is stupid and while not deviant, is self-destructive. Should we stop paying for medical care for those who have smoked and got emphysema or lung cancer?

I'd forgotten, she wasn't around long, I believe that issue helped to end her career.
