if i remember right the statement was not "its too flexible"

it was a request for increased strength and toughness
Since toughness is a combination of strength and flex and the request omitted flexibility it is a case of using the process of elimination.

I believe that is the reason that people are saying it doesnt need flexibility. Although there could also have been a communication with Jon around that time mentioning it in an email.
