re: Genentech

I think they were the original biotech firm. I have started my DD with that firm, FWIW.

My experience in investing in medical firms is limited to Medtronic. My wife worked for them back in the early 80's before she joined me at Intel and got a handful of shares through the employee stock participation plan. Through gains and a series of splits over the years, she now holds hundreds of shares. This is the kind of long term action I would like to plot in biotechs.
