They had it, they just didn't have enough manufacturing capacity at the time. I've posted this very informative 2016 QD Forum video more than once. Hartlove is pretty clear about what happened. Though they had been developing non-Cd containing materials w/ Samsung through a JDA since 2009, their production was geared towards Cd because they hadn't anticipated any display company wanting the non-Cd product with its performance gap. Samsung would not put cadmium in their displays. So easy decision, instead of getting zero dollars Nanosys licensed their technology to Samsung. They also could and did sell non-Cd materials to Samsung. This really is old news but Hartlove also states in the video that they were forecasting that 50% of their 2016 revenue would come from non-Cd materials.
