UniCredit (Italy) proposed a merger with SocGen (France) a couple of days ago.

This is almost the pre-Lehman moment where banks in Europe are seeking to voluntarily merge ahead of being forced to merge by a turn of events.

My guess is Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank merge in some format.
