Based on what you're saying, if this doc actually exists, it sounds like this was third party published material and not the original, alleged false statements. In that sense, "Published" means that a third party heard or saw the statement -- that is, someone other than the person who made the statement or the person the statement was about. If someone feels their character has been defamed they would need to go after the individual who made the alleged false statements and not a third party.
