Because Bahrain is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, the weather is extremely hot, the Middle East is experiencing a diabetes epidemic (largely due to American fast-food), and eating out is viewed as a status symbol. And Gay is part of an international restaurant consulting group called The Next Idea.
Just a hunch on the reasoning for Bahrain... if you look at Joey's FB page and cross check his family members, you see a lot of them from the Middle East. Perhaps he felt he had some good connections there to try out a GNH.
