Agree. EVERY major medical device player in the surgical space will need a robotic platform to compete. It is the future of healthcare, we are just on the verge of this becoming mainstream. From what I am seeing, there will be the following three types of robotic platforms in major hospitals by end of 2018, it’s already in place at some hospitals:
ISRG (already there)
Mako or some other orthopedic robot (knees, hips, etc..)
Brain and/or Spine robot
Lung will start and gain momentum in 2019.
It will be interesting to see the consolidation of robotic platforms as the years go on. Will ISRG, JNJ, Medtronic, etc..decide to start acquiring the top robotic players and start to leverage a portfolio that is more broad and be able to provide scale from an operating system perspective. We know Verb would like to be the OS for multiple robotic platforms, but you have to wonder if having Verb as your OS, does that make your robotic platform less attractive to a company like Medtronic that will most likely compete against Verb & JNJ? Does Google start acquiring medical robotics, or Apple? It will be exciting to say the least.
