During a hurricane, riptides and currents who can guess how long it would take?

So if your within 3miles of shore on a piece of wood.... How would you make sure the currants didn't keep pushing you out further? or parallel? to shore? for three days? 1/4 of a mile from shore and I believe most of us would stay clinging to whatever we were using to stay above the water. Not like they had oars and a motor. Only my opinion nothing more. JMO
