Sure. It happens with big pumpadumps all the time. Toxic funders want out, and so they pay for wash trading to goose volume. Traders jump on board, often prompted by social media promotion, often from Twitter and Skype "groups".

The funders start to bail, and when they're done, at least for the moment, the excitement dies down, and so does the volume.
