Brad, on a side note, I see you’re a fan of Erich Fromm. He’s one of my favorite analytic theorists. I’ve pretty much lived my life by the ideas contained in his book, Escape from Freedom. If you’re interested in a lesser known work, read Zen Buddhism and Psychoanalysis. He puts forth the idea that repression is very much a cultural phenomenon in an interesting way, which really hit home for me. He gives an insightful example, in one of the latter chapters, of a Viking who represses his instinct to be kind to a fallen enemy because of cultural mores. Anyways it’s interesting that the “return of the repressed,” one of Freud’s great ideas, could result in the return of kindness. Particularly relevant this day and age.
