Simple math! More about wording . Bill is $300, each of 3 pays a 100 ×3 =$300 Bill is $260 actual cost now! Each has paid $90 after the $10 back now so $270. And the waiter has $10. So subtract that $10 to get to the actual cost of $260! Like I said its more about wording and how people comprehend what they read.
