if you don’t have funds from before ,yes you have to wait fir today’s funds to clear

It only takes 2 days now for funds to settle (new rule went into effect several months ago), but you can usually purchase another stock with unsettled funds.......as long as you don't sell that same stock on the same day as purchase......wait 2 days for it to clear or you could get a trading violation. It's called "taking a free ride".......and it's a no no.
