I have also read bad stories about both exchanges, however my experiences have been fine.
My moneys are in coinbase and I ether send directly to the said exchanges or I use evercoin to convert my coins to whatever I intend on purchasing with.
As soon as my trades are completed I send the paccoins to my offline wallet.
