No, that's not how it works. As mentioned, google "shorting shares" and it will explain in detail. It would take me some time and a lot of typing to explain how it all works.

Technically, if you do not have your shares locked with GTC order they can be borrowed from the broker and shorted. That's my understanding.

They can borrow shares which may include yours and no they would not be telling you. Called naked shorting.

There's a simple solution. Place a sell order and the shares are locked up.

My sell is in for $140.00 right now.
