They still had the opportunity to make it messy and they didn't. Why not? They could have dug up dirt on Ronin and didn't. They could have said Stafford was tied to Xencor and was trying to steal the IP and that is why he said it was worthless. They left too easy. Unless there is a deal Ronin already had in place that would reward them thru their options there must be something else.
