Elmer: Re: Is AMD's low Opteron output a yield problem or just low demand?

That's a "Are you still beating your wife" question. You are assuming as fact that there is low Opteron output. I have nothing other than Inquirer statements to support that position. And, how do you quantify "low"? Does that mean less than Athlon? (it certainly is). Or, less than Xeon (it certainly is). Or, less than Itanium (probably not). Maybe it means less than some arbitrary number that Magee came up with. Your statement means nothing until you tell us what you mean by "low output" and prove your point. What metrics are you using to measure Opteron output against this seemingly arbitrary definition of low? Are you taking Magee's word for it? This is the same guy who said that Prescott would come out on 130nm.

I remember many people, both 'vangelists and 'droids saying that the Opteron ramp and market penetration would be slow. It is and will continue to be. I don't think we have enough data to quantify how slow it has been and whether it has been "too slow" in comparison to how slow it was expected to be.

The fact that there are retail packages available in copious quantities tells us only one thing - AMD is able to make enough to satisfy both OEM demand and "Pricewatch" demand.
