Hospitals are eager to fill empty beds.
And Secondly. If a mother says a child is suffering symptoms and the hospital turns them away, and something happens, resulting in serious illness or death, the hospital can suffer a lawsuit.
So, both these things work in the favor of both parties. A perfect excuse to accept the child as a weekend patient and an assurance for the mother that her child will not be turned away.
As to how long ago this all took place, I'd guess about 10 years ago. The young woman was renting a house across from ours.
