Little Richard(the "Queen" to Elvis' "King" in McLean's "American Pie") always said Elvis was a blessing who opened the door for black music. There was one Billboard rock & roll #1 hit in 1955...one...Bill Haley's "Rock Around The Clock".Elvis had five #1 hits in 1956 and the only other #1 that could even be considered r&r that year was "My Prayer" by the Platters.I'm only 42 so I'm viewing r&r history from a post-Beatles,second generation-I-was-not-there perspective,so I appreciate and respect your first hand knowledge.Jeez,I didn't get my first Elvis album until I was maybe 10(Elvis' Golden Records).I understand there was interest in blues music and black artists before Elvis, yet Elvis took blues music, took gospel, took country twang and taking the baton from Haley put rockabilly on the map. That early Elvis, the Sun Records' Elvis, the early RCA Elvis is without peer in the r&r era.jmho.Now don't get me started on the Beatles.<g>THEY'RE GODS.

OT I thought Bo Diddley was one of the fathers of Rock n Roll. Remember the Bo Diddley beat?
