I agree that they cannot divulge specifics if they are in talks for a merger, that makes sense. If that were the case, the answer would have been: "We cannot discus this at the current time". Or something to that effect. However, the person responded and specifically said that they are not in any negotiations to merger with any other company.

I think that is really telling. Unless that employee does not know what the management is doing, I believe the statement is very clear as to the validity of the rumor. IMO
