#4205 RE: AHayesC #4204

Have to agree. HP and GE are not bastions of innovation. Haven't been for decades. Too old, too complacent, no leadership.

The real competition in the 3D space comes out of Europe. Materialise (MTLS), based in Belgium, and SLM Solutions, based in Germany.

GE tried buying SLM Solutions not long after the company went public but the offer was nixed by activist investors. SLM only trades on the Frankfurt exchange.

Back in July, GE signed a joint venture deal with Allegheny Technologies Inc (ATI) focusing on the development of a meltless titanium alloy powder for use in 3D printing. This again shows that GE doesn't have the smarts in this sector. They have to buy the expertise.

The domestic competition comes out of Minnesota with Stratasys (SSYS) and Pennsylvania with ExOne (XONE) but those companies are both struggling too.

DDD has been its own worst enemy in the recent past but the company is trying to turn it around. So far the company has only managed to stabilize the business, company management has yet to produce a plan for sustainable growth.
