L'apposition du marquage CE médical est la dernière étape d'une procédure basée essentiellement sur :
un rapport bénéfices/risques favorable aux patients,
la classification des dispositifs médicaux en rapport avec le risque d'utilisation,
l'élaboration d'un dossier technique par le fabricant par produit ou gamme de produits,
la référence à un système d'assurance qualité,
la mise en place d'un système de vigilance (matériovigilance) des incidents ou risques d'incidents liés aux dispositifs médicaux,
l'intervention périodique d'un organisme notifié (SGS).
The granting of CE is equivalent to the FDA stamp of approval.
Note that EU authorities have ambivalence toward the FDA - exception is when EU companies need FDA approval when they wish to implant their products in the US
