Navy returns to compasses and pencils for navigation with shorter watch hours for sailors to avoid a repeat of deadly collisions at sea

At least four major accidents have occurred in the western Pacific this year
There has been too much reliance on automated systems with many Naval ships not clearly displaying their position on radar particularly at night
The Navy has allowed ships to rely on grueling watch schedules that have left captains and crews exhausted
Some sailors have been on duty up to 108 hours each week
New rules will see more navigation done manually using pencils
There will be a shorter watch schedule for those on the bridge to reduce fatigue
