I've been in Med device for 16 years and have always heard it is purely a marketing tool. Get the patients in the door. If they are not qualified for robotics they most likely stay in the system and get lap or open surgery.
This correlates strongly with a specific hospital's managed care contracts. However, based on my experience I think it's safe to generalize that most robotic cases are break-even at best, except cardiac.
