Apple does have exclusivity for short period of time (for near field only) if they choose to adopt. This creates the argument why Energous promised for mid field approval in 2017 if no big whale committee to near field (with software turn on mid field).
If Apple choose not to adopt, someone else (such as Samsung or Huawei) can jump in for their next product release (before Apple next product release)
