As for the children, they are born ready for their future as long as they learn that respect, trust, and love must be earned to have meaning. Honesty goes a long way as well. Then teach them everything you wish you knew at their age as long as they are eager students.
Answer any questions they have as if you wanted the answers yourself. Be fair with them and give them the benefit of the doubt until you see a problem. Never tell them NO unless you tell them WHY even if they don't understand it or don't like it. At least they know where you are coming from.
I did this with my daughter and we had few arguments and she is now a well adjusted young woman on her own with a good job and future.
With good parenting and guidance they will make good decisions unless they are hell bent on going off on their own and it is hard to fix humans. The only one we can fix is ourselves.
