Who is talking about altering history? Taking down statues of treasonous people who fought against out country is the right thing to do. Renaming schools named after people who wanted to maintain slavery is the right thing to do. Marching in the streets wanting to eliminate non-white people and Jews is the wrong thing to do.
No one can make Hitler disappear from history, but no one in Germany wanted any of the Hitler statues to remain on display, or even to remain. Trump's Nazi followers say that was censorship, but you simply can't convince the majority of citizens to keep things like that around.
I'd suggest the US has reached an actual tipping-point as Russia did when large numbers of citizens through-out the Soviet empire spontaneously started tipping-over all of the Lenin statues.
Dedicated communists who wanted to save Lenin statues had to get to them first and remove them to a safe storage area, where they still sit, or watch them destroyed as scrap.
