Hamburg is the center of militant anti-fascist groups in Germany. It was an interesting choice of location for the G20 conference when it was announced early last year. If held in some cities in former East Germany, the G20 would have been met with odd neo-nazi protests who are opposed to global trade.

Most of the protest activity was organized at the Rote Flora, a building which has a long and interesting history.

Years ago the center for these folks was West Berlin, quite a curious place at the time. People who lived there were officially not West German citizens until they returned to West Germany. I'm glad I saw that and the very peculiar society in East Germany and Yugoslavia while they existed. They were definitely "not normal".

But if they had existed during my lifetime I would not have chosen to be a tourist in Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia both of which I would have found far too disturbing, too malevalent and unsafe, akin to visiting North Korea today.
