The previous ones were a single solar cell. The point of this was to show that they can combine several solar cells together without losing any efficiency. Whether it's 1 square foot or 1 square meter or 1 square mile, it works the same. That was the point, to show potential partners or companies that may license the system that it can be scaled to the desired size without losing any efficiency. That's how I read it anyway.
