Seems to me we're getting awfully close to a parallel currency of sorts:

Gresham's law is a monetary principle stating that "bad money drives out good". For example, if there are two forms of commodity money in circulation, which are accepted by law as having similar face value, the more valuable commodity will disappear from circulation.

I am sure the IRS will create the rules around claiming of capital gains on crypto-currency but since there is no government control over the cryptos, know one is going to be forced to disclose that info and since it is getting more and more acceptance internationally, it is going to be awfully hard for the IRS to get any proof. This will be interesting to watch.
