Nixon launched the "war on cancer" in 1971

There has been no war on cancer. The amount of Federal money spent on cancer research is trivial. When I was in grad school in the late 1980s, the NY Times had an article about congress holding hearings into why we hadn't made more progress in the war on cancer because some $20 billion in Federal money had been spent directly on cancer. On the same day, the Time also had an article about Pentagon spending on Trident submarines. The contract called for 30 submarines at $600 million/sub and the article stated cost over runs means they now cost at least $1.2 billion/sub. There were no congressional hearings or complaints about spending the extra $18 billion on subs despite that being almost as much as spent on the entire "war" on cancer.

46 years later, the results aren't looking so good. More cancer than ever. More deaths than ever. Lifestyles worse than ever. Obesity worse than ever.

Cancer soon to surpass heart disease as #1 cause of death.

Why?

You answered your own question. Horrid lifestyle and diet choices are driving the generation of more cancer cases. You left out one major factor in increasing cancer incidences, the significant increase in lifespan due to medical advance. Cancer risk increase dramatically as people get older. As far as the results not looking good, you must be joking. There has been dramatic improvement in survival in a number of cancer types and the understanding of the mechanisms of how cancer arises and how it causes lethality.
