The amount of time spent attempting to solve a problem, taken as a single consideration, tells very little about how far or near success may be.
Charles Goodyear spent years attempting to make rubber useful in hot and cold weather. One failure after another. Then, success in principle, and a few more years to perfect the process. I think this will happen with NNVC, possibly has happened already but not yet documented well enough for official release.
In any case, citing "12 years" does not inspire me to bet against them. The company's equipment, staff, and knowledge, is today not at all comparable to what it was only a few years ago.
