The Best Watering Holes
.. are the country fairs in the Scottish border regions. Known as 'The Ridings' they celebrate the local custom of running your horse through the valley dales, from town to town, while everybody waits back at the park for the winner, while getting totally 'pissed'.
As the race is over by 10:00 A.M. you can imagine how much effort the populace has to put into their side in order to get drunk before the close of the race.
The drink is whiskey. Nothing else. Everyone has a bottle or two under their jersey.
One year I witnessed the sodden embankment at the creek's edge give away beneath the feet of those using a sheet of cantilevered stuck-in galvanized tin as a backsplash to a rigged urinal. They all ended up in the water just behind them, to the calamatous roar of approval from the crowd, right on the chime of ten.
That's when the drinking began in earnest.
