He's not anymore and some may argue that NE is the best team ever.

When he was head coach at USC they were really good.
He's not anymore and some may argue that USC is no where near as good now.

Using your mutually exclusive thought process neither of those statements should be true.
5 minutes on the internet and you'll see that they are both in fact valid and true.

Likely due to a significant loss you've experienced on this ticker in the past you're acting out what's commonly called confirmation bias. Zoom out a bit and imagine a bigger picture.
