Why a lot of homes in some areas have no basements:

1. Expense. In the right area, basement square footage is actually fairly low. In others, due to rock, caliche clay, the dig can be very expensive.

2. Related to #1, soil conditions can make a basement problematic. Keeping the water out can become expensive, and in some areas the basements still leak after you have paid the big bucks to prevent it.

expense, expense expense, Digging those holes are not cheap, especially if it is rock under dat house haaaaaaaa

In many areas of the country the watertable is very high. Keeping a Basment dry can be almost impossible. Cost of a basment : 500-1500 to excavate, Basment Walls approximatlty 10 -15000 per 1000 sq.feet. You can't figure footings, since they are used in either case. Spending that kind os money for something that won't be able to be used, doesn't make much sense.
