It's a first for smartcodes appearing and being used in a public promotion via cellphone in the US. Not necessarily a super big deal when considering everything else that has already happened... but still a first, and that's the point of the PR from where I see it. It is a small thing in and of itself.
As you rightly notice, there have been many other promotions using the concept, from Mobot's work with Ellegirl and Starbucks, to our partners across the pond using 2D barcodes, to everything in Japan...
Really not much difference except for
- 2D smartcodes
- In the US
- Linked via cellphone for public participation
