I do not see it as a sign of weakness - if you follow the biotech sector, you will be familiar with the name of an infamous "reporter" for TheStreet.com named Adam Feurstein - he bashed every stock under the sun, simply making up lies as he went - crossed the wrong company at one point, got sued, and he's nearly disappeared from the web now - don't know what happened to the case, but obviously he was worried enough that he decided to keep his trap shut and change his ways.
