How long have you lived there in NC? Look up the Reed mine. There have been some very large placer nuggets found in your state...but, I haven't heard of much in since the mid 1800's or so. I did a lot of studying on this earlier this year.

On nugget for instance was 52lbs. in one of the SW counties.

I could get much more specific...but, it's all about the geology and processes (and volcanic island arc) that formed the Appalachian mountain chain. Your state in particular looks like a glacier blew through your blue ridge and deposited gold in your piedmont area. In fact, the piedmont and your coastal plain were all formed from erosion of this volcanic island arc.

Wish I was where you are. Up state NY essentially has no gold. It's largely an extremely old granite shield structure. Where as if, you look at a geological map of your area and the Appalachian mt chain you will see just how massive these structures are. They are blatant!
