TiE MALAYSIA CHAPTER- NETWORKING EVENT FOR LIFE SCIENCES, BIO-IT AND HEALTHCARE

JULY 22nd, 2003- On the 9th of this month more than 100 members and non-members of the TiE Malaysian Chapter gathered at Sentidos Tapas, Starhill to attend a networking event for Life Sciences, Bio IT and Healthcare.

TiE (which stands for Talents-ideas-Enterprise) Malaysia is one of the 40 TiE Chapters worldwide that forms a non-profit global network of entrepreneurs and professionals. Y.B. Datuk Amar Leo Moggie launched TiE Malaysia in January 2002. Members of TiE come from a variety of corporate and academic backgrounds.

Guest and members started arriving as early as 5.30pm. TiE's Executive Director Mr Manoj Kumar was present to receive the early birds. As more people trickled in steadily, delightful looking tapas and a variety of drinks were served. TiE Malaysia president Tan Sri G. Gnanalingam graced the event with his presence and was seen mingling with different guest and members throughout the evening.

At approximately 7.30 pm, Mr Nick Ashby, a Charter Member of TiE welcomed guests with a brief introduction on TiE and the objectives of the event which is held in line with the government efforts to promote the biotech industry. Mr Ashby notes that the recent SARS attack has open up many opportunities in the industry. Governments from around the globe are dispensing grants and sponsorships to encourage and cultivate interest in the biotech field.

The evening's keynote address was delivered by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BioEnterprise Asia, Mr Gurinder Shahi. Dr. Shahi is trained in molecular biochemistry and international health policy and management and his work experience includes work on life science technology assessment, strategic business planning, R & D and work process improvement, performance appraisal of joint ventures and strategic alliances, market strategy development, economic and policy analysis for health intervention and evidence-based decision-making for investment and implementation.

Dr Gurinder Shahi speech was entitled 'Accelerating Bio Innovation & Bio Entrepreneurship Development' and he discussed the issues, challenges and opportunities facing life science technology entrepreneurs and early stage enterprises, and reveals the critical factors for successful bio-entrepreneurship that he has gleaned from years of traversing the rugged BioBusiness landscape.

Datuk Prof.Dr M Jegathesan was the next speaker of the evening. A medical and pathologist by training, Dr Jega is the Chairman of BioEnterprise Asia (M) Sdn Bhd. He is also very involved with the World Health Organization (WHO) as he has served as a member and Chairman of the Scientific & Technical Advisory Committee of the Tropical Disease Research Program sponsored by WHO, World Bank and UNDP.

Datuk Prof. Dr M. Jegathesan, who shared his insights on the opportunities that await life sciences entrepreneurs in the highly topical areas of public health and infectious disease control and prevention.

This was followed by presentations by three companies; AP Genomics Sdn Bhd, DHA Phenomics Asia-Pacific and Southern Domain Technologies Sdn Bhd. These companies provided information about their business, latest developments in DNA-based diagnostics and applied security respectively.

AP Genomics is a genome-science technology developer focused on translating the findings of cutting edge R & D into clinical and commercial applications. DNA Phenomics Asia-Pacific specializes in discovery and development of diagnostic tests and services for growing market in personalized medicine. Last but not least, Southern Domain Technologies Sdn Bhd is a pioneer in Biometric Solutions for Identity Management using Iris Recognition.

The last presentation prompted a few questions. Many were very interested to know more about the Iris Recognition Technology. This is hardly surprising as the need to accurately identify people for especially security measures has never been of more importance than now. The Iris Recognition Technology promises a more accurate method of identifying people as it takes into count an individual's unique physical and behavioural characteristics.

The informative evening came to an end with more servings of tapas and drinks, networking and a photo session for the speakers and presenters.

W2P,

That is interesting since the 22 July article covering the conference didn't reference "DNA Print".
