It was a damn shame how Woody ended his career. I read Bo Schembechler's autobiography (big surprise right?) Bo's first year was my freshman year. Broke my heart when he retired. Didn't care for Moeller. Glad he was short-lived. Am fond of Carr.
Back to the autobiography. Bo was a player under Woody at U of Miami Ohio... one of his assistant coaches at OSU before he became head coach at Miami Ohio then on to Michigan.
He had nothing but respect for Woody. One of the most touching stories (IMO) told of a layover in a southern airport in the days of separate dining rooms. They had one black player with them at this point. When the team went in to eat, they were stopped at the door and told that the black player was not allowed in.
Woody started to boil... Then where can he eat. They were given directions to the "colored" cafeteria. Woody replied that if that was the case, they would all eat there. The airport employee started to fidget nervously and said they couldn't do that. They did not have enough room there for all of them.
Woody was on the verge of exploding.
Okay. Then I'll eat in there with him... and off the two went.
Good for Woody. It is unfathomable to me that an incident like that could have happened. What an amazing time of ignorance.
Back to the present. Time will tell with the new QB... sure hope he commits to us but life will go one no matter what.
